Backroads 03:31
Backroads (by Connor Garvey and Shannon Wurst) She’s driving down the highway And exits to the backroads Driving slow Sees shopkeep on the corner & children selling lemonade Sees it clear on the back way We are bodies in motion who we are is how fast we go shoot straight through the heart or take the long way around He’s riding on his bicycle feels the sun the bumps the wind feels it all pedaling Every man that passes by surly has the dream to fly His feet grow wings pedaling We are bodies in motion who we are is how fast we go shoot straight to the heart or take the long way around I am just walking as the leaves hold off the rain making a beat, making a sound Off of the street, I am what’s around Connection’s complete with my feet on the ground We are bodies in motion who we are is how fast we go shoot straight through the heart or take the long way around

Move On 02:45
Move On (by Connor Garvey) I walked along where the ocean meets the land at least where it’s visible to me and I drew out my angst with my toes in the sand watched waves clear it and wrote it again and moved on And the waves fell hard on the shore brought cold winds to chill the core so I drank some wine and I tried to forget I put more clothes over ones that were wet and I moved on, I tried to keep the same face on it’s getting cold So I threw my sadness in the sea hoping it’d wash away like sand but being underwater makes it harder to breath where does sadness go when it’s got no way to leave? So I moved on Chorus I walked along where the ocean meets the land at least where it’s visible to me and I drew out my angst with my toes in the sand watched waves clear it and wrote it again

The Reflection (by Connor Garvey) The branches hold the dew the lake it holds the moon and the distance disappears reflection moves in time and weathers ripples fine as if the moon were here But there’s a cloud between me and you It’s hard for light to make it through and I know the distance grows This rope around in my chest is pulling me out west though what we have is fine your roots are growing stronger my time away is longer reflections out of line But there’s a cloud between me and you It’s hard for light to make it through and I know the distance grows and if the sun shines down and warms the ground and lifts the fog will we see it all? There’s a cloud round both of us its getting hard for us to trust the sun will shine- we’ll feel its glow the distance grows

Pencil Frame 04:30
Pencil Frame (by Connor Garvey) There’s an empty frame about head high except eggshell paint there’s nothing in side but oh, what great potential, so much can fit in this frame of pencil once you commit A young couple moved in a real fixer-upper made renovations, good love and healthy supper but oh, what great potential, so much can fit in this frame of pencil once you commit And once a year they’d climb the stairs to the unfinished room they’d grab a chair and sit and stare and wonder what to do to put a mirror or a window in their frame on the wall or nothing at all So they got engaged and they chose a date for June the 4th why should they wait? because oh, what great potential, so much could fit in this frame of pencil once you commit The family grew and they built new walls and little feet ran down the halls but oh, what great potential, so much can fit in this frame of pencil once you commit Chorus Now they all grew old as all things just do halls and walls and little shoes kids moved out on their own And they left the folks in the unfinished home Now they spend their time atop the stairs with the same sight from the same chairs but the empty frame each day it changes as their life slide show rearranges And oh, what great memories, so much they fit in this frame of pencil without touching it

The Bird 05:53
The Bird (by Connor Garvey) Standing on a platform high, stick on a rope in hand People come from far and wide for the trapeze man The circus comes once a year on the tracks from Illinois Not much else comes through here to enjoy Word here travels slow but travels nonetheless I heard its his last show heard it will be his best weighing in 195, a legend so I’ve heard closest man to flight alive, they call him The Bird Should he let go a second too late a second too soon we all know the fate most wouldn’t try or ever let go they’d swing ‘till they stopped release and walk home this dangerous flight, that’s why we stare freedom is flying for those who dare The ticket taker took her toll, the crowd pushed to their seats starts with a drum roll to quicken heart beats they sat through the elephants & sat through the lions roar silence the evidence of who the crowd was for “Now ladies and gentlemen I hope you’ve enjoyed the show we’ve got a special treat before you go Man’s not made for flight, this I’m sure you’ve heard but let me introduce tonight the man, the legend, the bird” Chorus The breathing and the music stopped The Bird began to soar eyes on the man up high, thoughts on the floor they’ve seen this show before with flips all in-between but he’s got something in store ain’t nobody seen Swinging momentum builds a mother shields her eyes fearing he might get killed or lost to the skies release...hearts in throats release...bird just floats Minutes passed and still he soared the crowds all left and the closed the doors they broke camp and the tent came down they packed the train and headed out of town He escaped the circus, escaped the show at his peak he just let go now in this town where truth is blurred there’s talk of flight and a man, a legend, a bird

Heart of the Ocean (by Connor Garvey) You love the sea you love the ocean can you love me as I ebb and I flow A castle of sand built in a day can you love me as I wash it away I want to be your anchor I want to be your home I want to be you shore So you’re never alone Yesterday came as no surprise water was rising in your eyes and all of your fears that you couldn’t hide you thought that my leaving was more than the tide I want to be your anchor I want to be your home I want to be you shore So you’re never alone Time has come again I must go can you love me as I ebb and I flow As the heart of the ocean is pulled by the moon the heart of me is pulled by you I cannot be your anchor I cannot be your home But I’ll be by your shore So you’re never alone

Red-Winged Black Bird (by Connor Garvey) If I were a bird I’d sing you to sky In fading light of day, a summer’s lullaby If I were a whale in cool depths of the sea I’d sing of your name with slow intensity But as a man I fall short But as a man I fall short again If I were a tree I’d grow tall for you and reach out my arms in your golden hues if I were a river I’d flow to your sea carrying lost snow from the north country But as a man I fall short again But as a man I’ll sing best I can Coyote calls to the blushing moon Casanova Fall smiles and leaves swoon I’d trade this guitar and these well seasoned words to sing half as sweetly as a red-winged black bird I’d give these eyes that have set on your skin for the song of the seasons, the rivers, and oceans Because as a man I fall short again But as a man I’ll sing best I can

Western Wind 03:50
Western Wind (by Connor Garvey) I am sleeping in my car on the side of the road somewhere in Oregon wood It’s as beautiful now as it is lonely I’d take you here if I could It’s a tight squeeze love for two, but I’m willing to try Because the summers been too long I am turning this car around Yea the summers been too long Western wind help me cover the ground. I’ll be home when the leaves turn But I’m turning first, yea I’m turning first, I’m turning now It takes four chords now to paint you in song last year it took me more. I was half diminished and I hid you in augmented hues I’d show a crack but not whole door It’s a tight squeeze love for two, but I’m willing to try Chorus Each breath I breathe is carried east the wind will lay it at your feet and make the roadside grasses dance and give this distance love a chance over river gorge and Cascade Mountains, Idaho with hot spring fountains to Iowa down the Mississippi, kiss the wind girl if you miss me. Heartland football & domestic beer, the wind picks up its kindness here and wears it like an autumn cloak through the cities of the eastern coast. After mountains green and mountains white, the freeze thaw of September nights trees all race to drop their leaves but baby wont you wait for me! Cause I’m turning first... (Chorus)

Hold Your Breath (by Connor Garvey) Darlin’ you know the money is thin like leaves of a tree when the winter moves in Darlin’ I don’t expect too much soon a tree with no roots ain’t expecting a bloom But if we just hold our breaths a minute more then we will know what the wait is for Just hold our breaths a minute more...then we will know I’ve just received government help this searching for work isn’t filling the shelves But this ain’t all I am lord knows I am trying I’m not slowly dying, I hope you can tell Chorus Word heard in passing is there’s work on the road it may fade quick so babe I must go I’ll call you soon from a gas station pay-phone I’m hoping by then I’ll know when I’ll be home We need to believe We need to believe Chorus

Monster 05:44
Monster (by Connor Garvey) This too shall pass my little one the morning will come and bring the sun the monsters you dream of are not as big as the seem the morning will come and bring the sun This too shall pass my good friend work will be found and life will mend the longer the wait the more you feel the change work will be found and life will mend So let it wash over, let it wash over let it wash over...and then, let it go This too shall pass lover of mine we’ll weather the storm we’ll weather fine this path that we walk on is not a path in the sun we’ll weather the storm we’ll weather time This too shall pass this mess we’re in fear will fight, but it won’t win the strength of a love, will not be judged by a law fear will fight but love will win Chorus Seasons will change just let it go there’s sun and there’s rain let it go seasons are changing, the seasons are changing, seasons are changing let it go, let it go, let it go This too shall pass my earthly days I’ll drift into night I’ll fade away this life that I’ve borrowed I’ll pass to youth in my stead I’ll drift into night I’ll fade away Chorus

Mountain Song (inspired by “The Poem” by Rene Dumal by Connor Garvey) Breathe in the mountain top the challenge is behind you and everything has stopped breathe out and feel the ground you cannot stay forever no you have to come back down So why climb at all why climb at all at all Standing where you stood before the mountain is behind you now but you feel it in your core you’re waiting to climb again you cannon sleep now that you’ve awaken So why climb at all why climb at all at all You climb, you see, you climb down, you see no more the challenge beyond the climb is how to keep the vision from fading with time because you have seen it all, you have seen it all, it all

about

Riding the momentum created by his 2009 release, “Constancy of Stars,” which gained national exposure through extensive touring and Sirius XM’s The Coffeehouse station with heavy rotation of the song “Soul on the Line” reaching #11 in top played songs on the station, Connor Garvey came back to the studio with the desire to record an even stronger album to delve into the depths of the songwriting craft. His fan-base was calling for the recordings of many of their stage favorites (i.e. The Bird, The Reflection, & Monster) and these fans also helped raise nearly $6,000 for the album. So, while Constancy of Stars was Garvey’s proof that he was worth the listen, this new album is the representation of a community-based and supported musician seasoned on the road...a very supportive road at that!

“Where Ocean Meets Land,” Connor’s fourth studio release, explores many of the dualities of the human condition: connection and distance (The Reflection), fear and hope (Hold Your Breath, Monster, Move On), roots and wings (Backroads, The Bird), as well as meaningful story based songs (The Bird, Pencil Frame, Western Wind). Even the cover art, acquired from a NASA satellite image, highlights how the meeting grounds of many of these dualities, such as the ocean and the land, are often more intertwined and connected than a linear border. Songs such as Monster and Hold Your Breath speak to personal and societal hurdles in our life paths, “Darlin’ you know, the money is thin, like leaves of a tree, when the winter sets in.” While this album welcomes in these life challenges it is not without good foot tapping- hook singing songs that make you smile, and a good old love song (Heart of the Ocean) which professes, “As the heart of the ocean is pulled by the moon, the heart of me is pulled by you.”

Nine of the eleven songs on this album are fleshed out with a dream-team of musicians including Tom Murphy on mandolin and Jonathan Best (David Byrne) on piano who both also left memorable tracks on “Constancy of Stars.” New to this album are Colin Winsor on bass (Gypsy Tailwind), Dan Boyden on drums (Model Airplane, Christian Cuff), & Pete Morse on electric guitar (Pete Kilpatrick Band). Singer songwriter Sara Hallie Richardson brings her beautiful soaring vocals to numerous tracks on the album complementing Garvey’s voice perfectly and Putnam Smith, friend and tour partner with Connor, brings his deep bass voice and smooth claw-hammer banjo to the songs Hold Your Breath, The Reflection, and Western Wind. Garvey opted to leave Move On and Mountain Song as straight solo acoustic songs to highlight the intimacy of his life performance and warmth of his voice.

Whether one is drawn to the fast-pace grooves (Western Wind, Pencil Frame, or Red-Winged Blackbird) the more laid back driving songs (Backroads, The Reflection, or Hold Your Breath) or the powerful heart songs (Monster, The Bird, or Heart of the Ocean) there is something on this album for everyone and a common thread of hope that not only ties this album together but connects to a core in all of us.

The album was recorded with Pete Morse at Busted Barn Recording in Portland, ME (Putnam Smith, Pete Kilpatrick) & Mastered with Pete Morse and Lance Vardis at Red Vault Recording in Portland, ME. Album representation and distribution is by Mishara Music.
